MORE ABOUT MARELIZE ROETS

I am a South African now residing in the United States, wearing many hats as a writer, educator, editor, and active member of the literary community. My mission is to use my writing to inspire others navigating unconventional career paths and to demonstrate the profound impact writers can have. Personally, I aspire to deepen my self-awareness through my writing, utilizing genres like literary realism and horror to express my thoughts and emotions with clarity.

My career ambitions are twofold: to become an accomplished author and screenwriter. Following my graduation from Full Sail University in 2017 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Creative Writing, I embarked on a journey that led to the development and production of my feature-length horror film, UNSHELTERED. Despite facing unforeseen challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the film was successfully completed and released in February, 2022 across various streaming platforms.

In addition to my film endeavors, I have pursued further education, graduating from the University of Central Florida with a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing in 2021. My thesis explores psychological horror and its exploration of trauma's impact on relationships. Alongside my academic pursuits, I've authored short scripts, published flash fiction stories in reputable journals, and continually honed my craft.

Beyond my creative endeavors, I'm passionate about education. My journey in teaching began in South Africa, where I taught various subjects to students and learners of all ages. Since then, I've held teaching assistant roles at the University of Central Florida, Full Sail University, and the University of Johannesburg. Currently, I instruct Foundations of Writing at the Los Angeles Film School, combining my love for writing with my commitment to education.

Engagement with the literary community is integral to my identity. As the Vice President of Operations for the Kerouac Project of Orlando, I play a key role in preserving literary heritage and supporting emerging writers. From, initially, serving as a selection committee member for the Kerouac Project to contributing as an assistant editor for Ghost Parachute, I actively participate in literary events and initiatives.

My journey as a writer is an ongoing process of growth and discovery, fueled by a relentless pursuit of knowledge and a willingness to embrace new experiences.
